Bone Dry Cappuccino – What Is It & How Is It Different?
💡 What is it? A bone dry cappuccino is a coffee beverage made from espresso and steamed milk, with a high-temperature steaming process that turns milk into thick foam, and a minimal amount of milk used, making the drink appear as if it has no milk at all.
📊 The Difference Maker A traditional cappuccino has a 1:2 espresso-to-milk ratio. In contrast, a bone dry cappuccino has a 2:1 ratio, resulting in a stronger and more intensely flavored drink, with less sweetness and more bitterness.
📕 A Brief History Bone dry cappuccinos originated in Italy in the early 1980s as a response to the demand for less milky and more intense espresso-based drinks, and quickly gained popularity in Italy and eventually made its way to the United States in the early 1990s.
🎨 The Perfect Recipe To make a bone dry cappuccino, use high-quality coffee, heat milk to around 140°F (60°C), and froth it to create a thick, creamy foam, pour the espresso into the cup, and add the foam on top, creating a dome shape, with a ratio of about 2 parts coffee to one part foam.
👨🍳 Homemade Tips Choose the right coffee beans, use a double shot of espresso or very strong coffee, add a thick layer of foamed milk, and dust with cocoa powder or cinnamon for an extra bit of flavor, practice makes perfect, so experiment with different ratios and flavors to find your ideal bone dry cappuccino.
